Frequently
Asked Questions
What is Compounding?

Compounding is the producing of a medication
or device by a Pharmacist using approved techniques and chemicals to a particular
patient upon the presentation of a prescription.
Is Compounding Legal?

Yes. Compounding was the traditional method of drug
production until the 1960's. As pharmaceutical companies grew, more and more
manufactured dosage forms took the place of compounded medications. Compounded drugs
have always been a legitimate and legal way to fill a prescription.
Is a Compounded Prescription covered
by my Insurance Company?

Yes. In most cases, an insurance company (HMO) will directly
re-imburse the patient for a compounded prescription. Barker's Pharmacy
and Compounding will provide the necessary documentation to assist our patients
in getting re-imbursed. Most HMO's have a provision for this method of service.
Why can't a Compounded Prescription be
covered at
the point-of-service like other manufactured
drugs?

A manufactured drug is not a "Compound".
Manufactured drugs (from pharmaceutical firms) are required to have an NDC number for
their products. This is a regulation from the Food & Drug Administration
(FDA). A Compound does not have these regulations imposed upon them because they are
produced for one patient. Therefore, they do not have an NDC number and cannot be
billed through an HMO by contract. Any attempt by an insurance carrier to force a
compound to be billed directly is fraud. |
